Tony Hilliam has released a message to the community explaining how Fury got to where it is today and the beginning of Closed Beta.
This coming weekend (July 7-8) we reach the most important milestone in our development so far - the Closed Beta Test. Most people reading this know what Beta means, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to take some time to give you all some more details about how we got to this stage, what Closed Beta means (to us anyway) and where we are headed next with Fury.
Let me start by telling you how we got here. When we set out to build this game more than two years ago, the question to the designers was "What can we be best at? What game can we make that will be Number 1 in its field?" At the time, World of Warcraft was already starting to become a phenomenon, and Guild Wars was the new kid on the block with a new business model.
We knew that creating a "me too" MMORPG was a recipe for failure and that trying to be all things to all people was prohibitively expensive. We felt that doing something a little different, and choosing the right business model would be the key to our success.
With this in mind, we made the decision to target our game at being the best Player versus Player game ever made. By focusing exclusively upon PvP aspects, we could avoid the pitfalls faced by other games trying to cater to different audiences, and really dominate our market niche. That way, we would never have to make compromises trying to make a game to appeal to different audiences.
