After weeks of half-hearted denials, Sony has shocked few and slashed the price of their 60GB Playstation 3 by $100. The sticker price - now $499 - is still more than any of their competitors, but nonetheless, Sony hopes the move pushes them up the sales charts through the holidays.
Sony also announced the introduction of a new 80GB system, which hits shelves this August priced at $599. It will also include a copy of MotorStorm.
Rival Microsoft, whose system has been a hit in North America, but lags in Japan, announced that the price cut will not effect their prices in that gaming hotbed. Speculation remains though that Microsoft will slash their North American prices at E3 this week.
Sony has cut the price of the PlayStation 3 by $100, or 17 percent, in the United States, a move that should boost the video game console's lackluster sales.
art.ps3.gi.jpgThe PlayStation 3, which includes a 60-gigabyte hard drive and a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player, will now cost $500, or $20 more than the most expensive version of Microsoft's Xbox 360.
The PS3 still costs twice that of Nintendo's Wii console, whose $250 price and motion-sensing controller have made it a best-seller despite its lack of cutting-edge graphics and hard disk.
