Computer "Solves" Checkers

On WarCry, we cover the latest and greatest games, but it is with a certain degree of sadness that today we learned the news that one of the world's oldest games has been "solved" by a computer program.

Researchers at the University of Alberta claim to have "solved" checkers. That is to say that their program is mathematically unbeatable. If it were to play itself, the game would end in a draw. The story is fascinating.

Canadian researchers report they have "solved" checkers, developing a program that cannot lose in a game popular with young and old alike for more than a thousand years.

"The program can achieve at least a draw against any opponent, playing either the black or white pieces," the researchers say in this week's online edition of the journal Science.
