Game Sales Up 31%, Price Cut Helps PS3

The rankings remained unchanged, but all three consoles posted significant sales gains in June. The Nintendo Wii continues to lead sales, the company put 381,800 new Wiis in homes, up 13% over the previous month. The Xbox 360 posted the largest increase, up 28% to 198,400 consoles sold. The Playstation 3 once again finished last, despite the price cut, moving only 98,500 units. For them though, that is a 20% increase. Not surprisingly, Nintendo also dominated the game sales charts, which in total were up 31%. They had six of the top ten games.

U.S. sales of video game hardware and software in June rose 31 percent from a year ago, driven by stronger demand for gaming consoles from all three major industry players, market data showed on Monday.

June sales of $1.1 billion were also up about 35 percent from May, showing strong momentum at the start of the traditionally slow summer season, the report from market research firm NPD showed.

"The industry continues to realize substantial gains, month after month, and on all fronts it's great growth," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.
