Canadian Game Industry Grows Alarmingly Fast

The Canadian game industry grows at an alarming rate, NPD tells us. Software sales were up 61% over the same period last year. Each year, NPD takes a mid-year look at Canada. Hardware sales were also up 111%, which is not a great shock since that half year period is the first with all three major consoles on shelves.

What is a surprise is that Nintendo swept the top 10 software sales. Four entries were for the Nintendo Wii, while the rest belonged to the Nintendo DS.

The NPD Group has reported that Canadian videogame retail sales have reached USD 498 million in 2007, a 61 per cent increase from last year.

This is the fifth consecutive mid-year time period in Canada that sales were higher than the previous year. Sales of videogame hardware have also risen 111 per cent over the prior year.
