Final Fantasy VI - JP box (front and back)April 2, 1994 - Final Fantasy VI for the SNES is released in Japan. This is the story of Terra, a half-human girl, confronted with her past and future and the insane, maniacal emperor Kefka. Magical beings known as Espers have returned from centuries ago to destroy the mechanized world Terra calls home. She is helped by 13 friends she encounters in her journey. Together, they fight to overthrow the imperial dictatorship.

This was the first game to not be directed by series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Instead, the role went to Yoshinori Kitasa and Hiroyuki Itou. To this day, it is still the largest playable cast in a Final Fantasy game. It features Itou's Active Time Battle system, which was introduced in Final Fantasy IV. The difference in this game is that a player can choose which character with a full bar gets to act next. Characters equip magicite to be able to summon espers including Shiva, Ifrit and Odin. The magicite is also used for casting spells and gaining new abilities and stats through Magic Acquisition Points (Magic AP). The most notable muscial pieces is the Aria di Mezzo Carattere, which first used synthesized voice, but later featured vocalist Svetla Krasteva, whose performance was added to the PlayStation version of the game.

Octboer 20, 1994 - Final Fantasy VI is released as Final Fantasy III in North America, due to FFV not having been localized. Names were changed, due to some technical limitations, which would only allow for 6 letters per name. So, a name like Stragus was changed to Strago. Other changes were made purely for cultural differences. Tina was the Japanese name for Terra. Tina sounds common to Americans, but it was exotic to the Japanese.
