Fallen Earth: QotW#31: Talking Game Business vs Design on Halloween

It's Wednesday again, and that means another set of questions will be answered, and this week Cynagin tackles in-game advertising and more:

Happy Halloween, Fallen Earth forum folk! Not a lot of spooky goings on hereabouts (we're just happy to get some rain and some real autumn weather), but that's just as well with all we have to do. Hitting a variety of questions this week that are less game design and more game business.

1. Are the forum ads indicative of anything to come (buy WoW gold, PLing services, etc. etc), or just something to keep the boat afloat (forums) whilst the game is in development?

Such is the beast that is Google Ads. Due to all the references to online games on our website, we sort of luck into having those ads on our site, but it's certainly not by choice.

We have no plans to support any sort of currency selling, power leveling, or similar such activities. Our measures against them have yet to the finalized, but we're certainly not going to support or excuse such activities.

2. I know this doesn't have much to do with game dynamics. However, I am very interested to know what kind of an advertisement campaign Icarus will run to promote this wonderful game. I ask because I truly want this game to do well. I'm just looking for a vague idea of how you're going to get this game into the MMORPG vernacular, beyond just word of mouth.

We are still working out the advertising campaign, but we're working with a number of media companies to formulate a large-scale strategy for print ads, web presence, contests, etc. We definitely don't want to make a great game and then fail to get players because no one hears about it. As part of this strategy we're planning on increasing our convention presence over the coming year, in addition to returning to the conventions we visited this year.

3. Now on to my question because I forgot my first one, will there be chariots?

No chariots; it's a difficult physics model to create with limited applications. We figure our time would be better spent tuning up cars or working on motorcycles.

4. Does the developer team dislike forum suggestions?

We like to see folks thinking and talking about the game, which suggestions are an excellent indicator of, but we can't read everything so there is stuff we never see. Also we've got a building full of creative folks thinking about this game all day so we barely have time to implement our own ideas most days.

5. Exactly how many times are various character models redone throughout the process of making a game?

Exactly? No idea. Roughly? Several. We're in the process of giving most of our creatures a pretty substantial touch up in addition to creating several new creatures such as the sasquatch (a.k.a. furry woodland throwback), the underdwellers, and the dreaded chupacabra.

6. Will we see any cars like the XB Ford Falcon AkA black Pursuit Special (or Interceptor if you will) from Mad max or other Movies in the game or cars that look like them as a nod to these films?

The Interceptor is indeed in the art reference we're using for vehicle design.
