NCSoft is taking a similar approach to The Matrix Online when it comes to one of their signature characters, Sarah Morrison. This character is being played by 3 different 'actors,' all 3 of which are female in real life. These actors take the role of NPC Sarah Morrison and play her out amongst the players on several different servers at once. IGN has an interview with the actors behind the avatar.
IGNPC: Computer controlled characters have an advantage in that they can simultaneously carry on different conversations with large groups of players. Are you at all worried about peak-period traffic jams around Sarah? Are you anticipating any other challenges with this new approach?
Gina Dionne: It's always a challenge juggling the chat channels, private messages, and the live action happening in game. Sometimes things go by so fast you miss stuff. Sometimes I get requests for game support while I'm on as Sarah and have to forward that request to a GM who is better able to help. But for the most part, the players are very understanding and have been a pleasure to interact with. As far as any other challenges, we'll have to be creative when we come across them.
Things like this were problematic for The Matrix Online's actors as well and made some 'events' quite odd. The best solution is many smaller somewhat private encounters, I found, while playing that game. I suppose the same would be true for Tabula Rasa. The problem, of course, is you don't get to reach as many players and the team might feel that's a waste. Personally? I'd rather be excluded from an event and have a ball when I'm finally in one, than have every event look like a circus with players all crowding the character and acting a fool. It pretty much trivializes the whole point in doing such events. Theres nothing more immersion breaking than some guy purposely trying to ruin the fun for everyone else. And theres always that guy (or three!)
