City Of Heroes: NCSoft Europe Hints at Possible New 'City Of' Game

| 12 Nov 2007 17:21

NCSoft Europe drops some hints about a potential CoH sequel over at GamesIndustry.biz. Overall, I'd say given the recent events, the total acquisition of the City of Heroes IP will bode well for the development of COH. But are they hiring up to put more stuff into the current game or is it really a plan to staff up for a new project -- City of Heroes 2, anyone?

And responding to the question as to whether or not that would specifically mean a new game, he said: "I think you'll get a bit of both, yes."

Personally, I don't think that would be a good move in my book. I think given the choices people would choose Marvel Universe Online over a City of Heroes 2 when it comes to 'new' games. If EverQuest is any indication, games being 'old' doesn't detract from their viability if they're still healthy. I think vets of City of Heroes would probably stick with COH if a sequel came out, and if they were ready for a new MMO, they'd probably choose Marvel. They would have to differentiate the two games enough so that the sequel wouldn't cannibalize it's predecessor.

If it's just CoH/CoV with better graphics and a bunch of new things, why would anyone stay with the original? Using the EQ example again, EQ2 differs greatly from EverQuest, so there are still two separate populations that co-exist in a healthy environment. I say just keep expanding on what you have instead of a sequel. But hey, what do I know? I'm a bear, I bite the heads off fish (+5 points if you recognize that quote.)

NCSoft drops some more hints here.
