Arizona Entertainment & Gaming Law Struck Down in Senate

| 8 Apr 2008 23:56

Proving that cool minds do indeed prevail sometimes, the Arizona State Senate struck down a controversial bill aimed at the entertainment industry. Discussed in an article at WarCry yesterday, the bill would have made game developers (among others) potentially liable:

  • The material is dangerous or obscene.
  • The person benefited from the production, publishing or distribution of the material.
  • The person knew, should have known or recklessly disregarded a significant risk that the material would substantially assist, encourage or result in another person committing terrorism or a felony offense.
  • The material was a cause in another person committing terrorism or a felony offense against a victim.

Luckily, the bill didn't even make it out of committee in the Arizona Senate for the following reasons:

Saying they had too many unanswered questions, members of a state legislative panel on Monday snuffed out a proposal that would make companies financially liable for creating or distributing books, movies and other media that eventually led to a serious crime.

Score one for the good guys!
