Newsletter Discussion: Console MMOs?

| 9 Apr 2008 21:49

With consoles continuing to chip away at the PCs market share within the game industry, it's only a matter of time before MMOs bridge the gap between your desktop and your Xbox. But will the extra exposure hurt MMOs or help them? This week, we want to know:

Do you feel that MMOs would benefit or suffer from cross-platform release across both PCs and consoles?

I think it'd work horribly if a company tried to run a computer based MMO at the same time as a console MMO

This is how FFXI works. It has people on consoles (PS2, PS3 and 360) and PCs playing together. In addition, there's no separation between the Japanese and other nationalities. Everyone gets the same content at the same time.

I think it'd work horribly if a company tried to run a computer based MMO at the same time as a console MMO; if the same content wasn't included in both, people would never stop complaining; if the devs tried to keep them the exact same there would be many limitations- from how many buttons are available to the subtlely different tastes between PC and console gamers.

In theory a console MMO could be successful, but i doubt the generally more casual/focus based console gamers would put up with the farming inevitably included in an MMO

It seemed to work for FFXI, which was designed for use with a controller. I had the PC version and I felt more comfortable with a PS2 controller hooked up. I never used the mouse. I barely used the keyboard for anything other than chat or my action buttons. I don't see why it couldn't work now, especially with consoles being better equipped to handle the space needed. I think it will help to have that extra exposure. It's not like the communities are going to get any worse.

will probably be more of the same, which is not exactly mmo's, but games i reffer to as "mo's"
, an example of an MO being guild wars, or phantasy star, which rely on town or lobby systems, and replace the open world system with 100% instancing. The only way i could see more mmo's coming to consoles is if keyboard and mouse systems are also added, much like the dream cast made available "back in the day" lol.
