Asherons Call: WCoD Interviews AC1 Dev Speed!

| 14 Aug 2003 16:23

Warcry: How did you get into the MMP industry?

Speed: Once upon a time a young and impressionable tester worked hard for a development software company in Providence, RI. A new employee talked about a magical idea that he and his friends had been working on. They wanted to create a whole world on the Internet! It was fantastical, and needless to say the young tester thought it would be a dream job to test a game instead of dry boring development software. Eventually his friends officially started work on this magical world and asked the young tester to follow his dreams and work for next to nothing. And the young man has lived happily since then. Who knows what wonders lie in store for him.

Warcry: Do you have a nickname and how did you get it?

Speed: Lots of people here call me S.P.D. since those are my initials. Some people on the team call me Speedy or Speed. I like Speed a lot since I'm a huge Speed Racer fan. I'm trying to get everyone to call me Speedy-Man since I'm also a huge Spiderman fan, but they said they won't until I get radioactive blood and can swing on a thread. So, I'm working on that.

Warcry: What is your proudest addition to Asheron's Call?

Speed: Tough one, I was very happy with the way fishing turned out recently. It was a ton of work for me and the system has a decent ability for expansion. I'm also very fond of my Ulgrim work. He's just such a fun character to write.

Warcry: What is a typical day like for you?

Speed: Heh, I answered this one at the ACPL and I'm not sure if I surprised
people or stunned them.

9am Wake up and shut off that damn annoying alarm. "Who turned that on anyway!"

10am Wake up and wonder why the alarm didn't go off. "Oh well, must have been one the radioactive spiders I've been breeding."

10:05 Time has passed. It's none of your business.

10:06 Jump into the shower for an invigorating shower.

10:07 Jump out of the shower because the water is $&%($* freezing.

10:30 I'm all done getting dressed and whatnot, time to go to work.

10:32 Run back to the house for my car keys and wallet.

11:00 Arrive at work, grab coffee, read email (90% junkmail).

11:15 Figure out what I'm working on for the day.

11:30 Actually start to get some work done unless something shiny is distracting me.

    12:30 Lunch!

13:30 Get back to work you slacker! Work, work, work.

20:00 - 23:00 Some time in here I will go home, depending on how much work I have.

Warcry: Do you have any pets and what are their names?

Speed: No pets, but I love cats and like dogs. My roommates have a little Min-Pin which is very cute and excitable and slightly incontinent. Her name is Pixie and I have a love/hate relationship with her. So cute, so annoying at times.

Warcry: Which Bartle type do you consider yourself? And as a consequence, what type of character do you play?

Speed: I tested as ASK, but I am definitely more of an Explorer/Socializer than Achiever and last Killer. I play an Unarmed Life/Item guy. He's fun, but not very effective at level 40, everyone else seems to get the kills when he groups, but that's just me being gimped. I have some other role playing characters and mules and stuff, but I mostly play my unarmed and I just started a pure Sword fighter, no magics.

Warcry: What is the last book you read?

Speed: I just read "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchett. It's one of his Disc World novels, which I love. He has a wonderfully fun and funny way of writing that reminds me of Douglas Adams. I also have been devouring the Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, everyone kept recommending his comic series and now I know why. It's the best series I've read since "Watchmen".

Warcry: You mention how much fun Ulgrim is. Where do you get your inspiration to keep him such an integral part of the game each month?

Speed: Hehe, he hasn't been very integral lately :) I think he's just really easy to write for. He's this wiseass and funny guy who has such a well defined personality that all I have to do is have him react to what's going on in the in the game world and sometimes let him parody what is going on in the real world. I think Ulgrim likes to make people laugh somewhere in that mess of ego and confusion.

Warcry: Thanks very much for your time, Sean.
