Runes of Magic Free MMOG Launches

Frogster has announced that free-to-play MMOG Runes of Magic has completed beta testing and is now open to the public.

It was sort of open to the public before, I suppose, as the game's open beta attracted more than 500,000 players, but now gamers can officially leap into "Rise of the Demon Lord," the first chapter in the new game set in the fantasy realm of Taborea. Players who signed up during the beta phase can continue to use those characters but the full version of the game will feature a greatly expanded world with new quests, instances and content.

Runes of Magic features a dual-class character system and over 1000 quests set across an "enthralling background story." The game's seamless design means there are no zone boundaries to contend with, while both instanced and persistent dungeons are available. Rounding things out is an optional PvP and guild war system along with other standard MMOG features like unique mounts, an "epic" crafting system, an in-game auction house and much more. Although originally created by Taiwanese developer Runewalker, Runes of Magic is tailored to "western MMO standards."

Free updates and add-ons are planned for release every four to five months, and a new coastal area with a "distinctly pirate flavor" called Ravenfell is set to open soon. Sign-up information and the free Runes of Magic client can be found at runesofmagic.com.

Well I'm re-downloading the game from one of the mirrors. Still painfully slow but it's faster than the previous download (I have more of the game download in 3 hours than I did with the other download running for almost 12 hours).

I was considering playing Starcraft while I wait but that would probably slow the download down to much.

I played for a little bit.. It was kinda fun. Probably more fun if I knew other people to play it with. Of course frist I have to figure out how all the friend and chat systems work (haven't really deleved beyond the mushroom killing and wood chopping bits).

This game downloads at the pace of a crippled slug.

Is there a quicker way to download this? At this it will be Saturday when it finally finishes, and I'm not exaggerating.

I've been playing this for a few nights now and while my previous experiences with MMOGs is minimal (non-existent) it seems pretty competent to me. It looks not bad, there seem to be a decent number of other people playing and it's free. It's also boring as hell, but I've been made to understand that's pretty standard for MMOGs. For a free game, it seems pretty damn solid to me.

I play on Govinda if anyone's interested in hooking up.

Maybe I'll try this game.. How's the character customization? (In terms of appearance) Is it one of those games where all the characters are the same height and have the same face or are there some fun slider to mess around with?

is this game worth it? I was thinking about playing Fallout 3 again but I might do this instead.

My major question is this. Is this an MMO that claims it is free but has a ton of content that you can buy in some online store?

I tried to download it, but my PC started doing that thing it does where it refuses to download anything properly, and my laptop wets itself at anything more graphically complex than Runescape.
Shame, really. I sorta want to give this a go.

I probably won't be able to resist trying this out. Downloading now.

Despite Runes of Magic being release it currently lacks a lot of polish to really qualify itself as a finished game. Incomplete skill descriptions, Chinese text still apparent in areas, and shortly before the game went out of open beta they completely revamped the combat system which threw balance into bedlam. Crashes and memory leaks are frequent, lag is horrible in towns or near the auction house, basically any small gathering of players. A lot of the real issues that the playerbase is experiencing now a newer player won't notice until they start to get further into the game so if you do start to play I'd advise against buying any of the cash shop currency; diamonds. Not to mention as a result of a credit card fraud issue back in January if you want to sell those diamonds for ingame gold through the auction house there is a 30 day waiting period.

The 'reputation' system on the PvP servers, as is my understanding anyway, is horrible. You can't AFK anywhere except your house or you can be attacked and killed, then possibly have some of your equipment looted. Kill too many people and you're flagged as a criminal, unable to enter any city for repairs and what not.

Crafting is horrible and breaks game flow. It's something to work on while you wait for your guild to form a group for an instance endgame when you have nothing else to do.

Boss fights consist of tank and spank, occasionally summon some enemies, there are a few memorably encounters but you won't enjoy those until you're max level on both classes with heavily modified equipment. Loot tables need work as well. There are raids but not for instances, usually only formed for daily quests.

Despite all of it though... it's fun, which is what matters. I've been playing it since closed beta and while my brother insisted I try World of Warcraft with him I found myself coming right back to Runes of Magic. It improves on World of Warcraft in some aspects, others not so much. Instant travel points > griffin rides. Need to kill an enemy for a quest or gather something it shows up on the radar. Track NPCs, monsters, the depth of character customization not only in appearance but equipment optimization is remarkable. It's really easy to level, earning gold is simple and while use of the cash shop makes the game easier it is by no means necessary (despite what a number of idiots may tell you, just don't suck and you'll be fine).

Looks boring and generic to me.

Could the same not be said about World of Warcraft? Hell, at this point, they're probably the definition of generic.

Holy shi-

XD Can't stop laughting XD

I did some youtube searches of it, seems everyones opinion is it's IDENTICAL to WoW but with some instanced content (and housing)

Ah, I gave up trying to download it. I can't keep my laptop on for a day, I'd feel like I'm killing it.

I ended up downloading this and it is actually pretty fun.
If you aren't playing WoW or another paid MMO I would suggest trying this out.

Man, I don't know what the hell's up. Machentacht server hasn't been up all day. I don't get this system.

edit: found out the problem. I signed up for an international english server rather than US and didn't know, then I was unable to access it after I was asked what country I was from much later. :/ Thankfully the community has a work around.

I've finally finished after over twenty-two hours clocked downloading.

And let me say, it was not worth it. I was expecting World of Warcraft meets Lineage II, but for free and smothered by Asians. I got that, but somehow it still came off to me as shitty, awkward, and despite my need for a real RPG gaming experience, I'd feel more inclined to do WAR/WoW trials over and over, hell, even the slower-paced EVE to get my fix than this game. It just reeks of some inexplicable... something, that makes me dislike it.

Well, I just found out something I didn't know about MMORPGs. Servers shut down at night. T.T

I've played MMO games like Nexus War and Dark Grimoire where this doesn't happen, so I was really surprised...and apparently characters don't port, so I guess I'll be starting a new one on a night server. :P

edit: that was weird. They shut the server off, then loaded it back up a few minutes later. So I guess I don't have to start over. Yay.

It's called maintenance. Status report?

Apparently they fixed one of the high level quests, and power gamers rejoiced. Right now, I'm having tons of fun as a level 11 knight/level 4 Priest. I'm pretty self-sufficient, but also a good tank/support combination.

Can't wait to see some people from here in the game. I'd be happy to heal you as you fight with my new spellset.

/Accidentally closed laptop

/Has to restart downloading the whole thing again

/Sigh
