Runes of Magic Free MMOG Launches

Frogster has announced that free-to-play MMOG Runes of Magic has completed beta testing and is now open to the public.

It was sort of open to the public before, I suppose, as the game's open beta attracted more than 500,000 players, but now gamers can officially leap into "Rise of the Demon Lord," the first chapter in the new game set in the fantasy realm of Taborea. Players who signed up during the beta phase can continue to use those characters but the full version of the game will feature a greatly expanded world with new quests, instances and content.

Runes of Magic features a dual-class character system and over 1000 quests set across an "enthralling background story." The game's seamless design means there are no zone boundaries to contend with, while both instanced and persistent dungeons are available. Rounding things out is an optional PvP and guild war system along with other standard MMOG features like unique mounts, an "epic" crafting system, an in-game auction house and much more. Although originally created by Taiwanese developer Runewalker, Runes of Magic is tailored to "western MMO standards."

Free updates and add-ons are planned for release every four to five months, and a new coastal area with a "distinctly pirate flavor" called Ravenfell is set to open soon. Sign-up information and the free Runes of Magic client can be found at runesofmagic.com.

Woo-hoo.. Six little blue bars downloaded..

..How many are there? 58?

All I want is an MMO where levels and equipment DONT mean everything, where the player is at least as important as the character - An MMO where a new character can jump right in and have fun, without having to hold down a second job for a month just to get to a high enough level to play with their friends.

But level-grind addicts and pack-rats (99% of the MMO population) would never touch it, so it wont happen :(

In WOTLK gear matters very little now

I'm trying to decide whether I care enough to give it a go.

Bloody hell, this has to be, in total, from download through patching process, 15 hours, and I'm not even sure I'm close to being done yet. The patcher only ever shows 10%! Some downloads take ten seconds, others take over two hours.

Don't be discouraged by the 10%, that was the same for me. Then it jumped up to 100% at the end.

Looks interesting, downloading atm. It sounds very much like WoW (which isn't neccessarily a bad thing), and I do like the fantasy visual style. And of course the word "free".

"Over 1000 quests"
Oh my!

It's the closest you will ever get to WoW without paying IMO.

I heard people say that this game would be the shit but when I played it I noticed that it's just shit.

So, I remember reading something about this on SomethingAwful, so I've decided to give it a shot, if only to spare me the drudgery of leveling mages over and over again in WoW. Maybe I'll roll something with tits. Like a Mage.

The problem is, it's been downloading for at least seven hours now, and when it finally finished, it began some seeding process and the Download rate dropped from 360 kbps to .1 kbps and HOLY SHIT IT JUST WENT UP TO .2 KBPS AND oh it's at .1 again. The upload rate is at 60 kbps, but my technical inadequacies show in that I don't know if I should be raging or not.

Edit: There's a Installation program now, so I'm confused.

It was doing a seeding process from the beginning of download. It should've told you you were done at one point, then it just keeps on seeding. Then you can x out, then you have to install, then you have to wait for all the patches to download. That'll be a couple more hours.

Honestly, I don't know why it's taking people so long to download. But be ready to wait for the updater.

edit: lvl 8 already, the beginning of the game moves freaking fast.

You just described EvE Online.

Try it. Steam has a 21 day free trial.

EVE has come closer to what I would want that almost any other MMO - I have played it on-and-off since it was released, and to me one of its greatest selling points (an actual loss when you lose) is also one of its biggest problems, because it can take hours to get into a fight that isnt grossly one-sided. Most of the time is spent chasing a group you outclass in every category, or running from a group that is outclassing yours.

Its a great game that I really want to like, but its just comes with too high a price when you get a connection issue or a client crash, or have to go AFK to answer the door or kick the cat.

Alright, it finished updating at around 12:45 am for me, so it took about 5 hours to download all the patches. Phew.

Well, let's get our groups together. I'm on the Macentacht(sp?) server now and my character's name is, unimaginatively, Krakyn. I'll give a world shout-out at some point (if I can) to see who's on from the Escapist.

"Over 1000 quests"
Oh my!

Well I downloaded and signed up for the game. Have yet to play it, but I appear to be getting parts of the registration and launcher in german. The activation e-mail for instance was completely in german, as is all the news in the games launcher except the bottom set of buttons. I signed up using the UK site and downloaded the game from a UK server on gamershell, is anyone else getting random parts in german despite their choices?

Ok, so it's easy to handle, because the interface is pretty much like WoW. Then there's this thing about having two classes on one char, which makes it less boring. You level separately with each class, but you can use some of your skills all the time, no matter which class you're playing.

Also, the cities look nice, "the great outdoors" too :P enjoyable ^^!

So far it's beating Darkfall with the player base.

It is a wow rip-off in most aspects. But at least it's free. I don't really get the pvp/non-pvp servers but hey, I'll work into that later.

I'm going to give it a try as soon as it downloads which is taking forever.

Anyone else screaming "WoW ripoff"? Well hell, its free!

I'm watching oodles of videos of the game from Youtube, and it seems that people generally take 1-2 days to download the game.. Can't understand why, but it does look like a decent game. I'll be downloading.

I have verified that, ridiculously, the problem is with updates/patches. Instead of also patching the downloadable game like any sensible company, they just left all the patches they've been doing over the history of the game to be downloaded afterward. Thus, I (think I) started at version 2.0.0.17. I'm now at version 2.0.0.1794 after a few hours.

I don't know what the final version number is...2.0.0.1795, knock on wood.

Holy hell this is a slow donwload. Anyone getting above 50 kbps here?

I'm not getting a slow torrent of it, but the freaking ClientUpdate program has taken at least an hour. It's freaking ridiculous. I don't know if it's patching or what, but I'm trying to be patient.
