World Of Warcraft: Blizzard Game Studio in Lull of Uncertainty

The Los Angeles Times ran a story today about the attempted sale of Vivendi Universal's video games unit, the parent company of Blizzard Entertainment. Vivendi has been continually dropping its asking price from its original $2 billion figure to entice buyers and is currently asking $800 million. Blizzard Entertainment had sales topping off at $750 million last year alone.

A good deal of speculative discussion has begun on the Battle.net forums about what will happen to the World of Warcraft project.

RELAX.

It is highly unlikely the MMORPG will suddenly cease development after four years in development, especially with an alpha that is already more stable than most of its competition that have been released for years! Millions of dollars have been pumped into this game and with beta slated to begin soon, I personally just do not see World of Warcraft tossed in the trash, even with the current uncertainty about what direction the future holds for the company....not with Blizzard's track record for massive success.

"....Players of Blizzard Entertainment's epic computer games operate in the "fog of war," with only a hazy notion of the dangers lurking around them. Now Blizzard's founders find themselves in a similar cloud of uncertainty.

Blizzard is part of the vast entertainment empire that French conglomerate Vivendi Universal put up for sale earlier this year.

But with no takers yet for Vivendi's games unit, and the sale price reportedly dropping, "we don't even know if we're part of the assets being sold," said Blizzard President Mike Morhaime, one of the studio's three co-founders. 'We're used to having more control over our destiny, and now we're just waiting'....."
