Cerebus, of Call of Fate, has released yet another thought-provoking article in his column, Hurm... Yet, this time he covers a topic that many of us (well, at least I tend to) avoid - griefing. Spurred off by Verant's decision to put anti-griefing measures into their upcoming game, Everquest 2, Cerebus discusses the effects on the players that such a system would have.
This excellent anagoly sums it up (but don't leave it at that! Read his entire article!):
Installing mechanics that eliminate griefing across all zones seems to me much like lobotomizing a mental patient that we can't cure otherwise. Yes it makes them placid and calm, but it removes their enthusiasm and their personality. It makes the world a dull flatline where everybody is kept in line via entirely arbitrary coercion.
