Newsletter Discussion: Religion Online?

| 10 Jun 2009 21:42

Priests, Clerics, religious guilds - whether in-universe or out-of-character, online games and their worlds often have a religious element to them. This week, we'd like to know:

What role do you think religion - of players and characters alike - plays in an online game?

Religion is a powerful element in society and in the human conscience if we like it or not. What the difference is between us all is what we see is that religion. Most people worship gods others demons, some deify science and mathematics or mountains, oceans, rivers, trees and animals, the essence of the universe itself or (when thus inspired or deluded) even other people.

We are all born with an urge to find a deeper purpose for our existence (even if some choose to simplify it and dismiss it). In gaming we thankfully have our holy healers. I know I always play a healer. Now for me I don't know about the gods, they don't matter much.

You'll generally find though that the good gods always win. My experience with this is mostly with Neverwinter Nights and the roleplaying games of that type. They are never written with an evil character in mind.

Even if you have the choice and you can choose an evil god you still have to play the game relatively neutrally or lose your evil. I think perhaps role-playing is a fun way for some saints to sin.

On the other hand a game can be a fine way for a player to experience the divine. I am sure there are plenty of people among us who have dreamed of performing a miracle healing, blessing or resurrection and pretended they were their favourite deity.

I myself will always choose a Druid if I can in any game. It's a terrible shame that they never make Druids. My religion, in games, will always lean towards the nature side if at all possible.

I personally despise the idea of formal religion. I feel it leans towards sheltered thinking with no room to explore there are possibilities to grow. One person's point of view on scripture might not always be the right one and he inevitably lived centuries ago. With a person being told how to think they will never learn. Wisdom is my religion.
